Fuji debuts The US made Formula Nippon car

Just under a year since the concept was announced, two brand new 2009 Formula Nippon chassis, designed and built by California's Swift Engineering, have gone through shakedown trials at Fuji Speedway. Autoblog spoke to Team Toyota TOM'S Andre Lotterer, one of the first two F'pon pilots to take the radically designed machine out for a spin, to see what he thought of the exceptionally wide single seater.

First off, they seem to be pretty well put together. In an unusual turn of events for a brand new car, nothing broke or fell off during the its first outing in anger. Equally unusual, the new design is almost as quick as the Lola chassis it replaces, and with a few adjustments is destined to be even quicker. That's saying something: Andre has managed to lap Fuji in 1 minute 23 seconds in the 2008 Formula Nippon car, less than 5 seconds off Lewis Hamilton's record of 1:18.7

Although the chassis currently lacks mechanical grip, pitching the car in to crowd pleasing slides in slow corners, Andre reckons that the gigantic 6' 4" wide front wing and sculpted sidepods are generating plenty of downforce, keeping the car planted through higher-speed bends. Unfortunately, those advanced aerodynamics won't be able to prevent incidents such as F1 refugee Yuji Ide's aerobatics at Suzuka earlier this year, and super rookie Kohei Hirate's wince inducing flight into the barriers at Motegi a few weeks ago, but the Swift monocoque is even stronger than the 2008 Lola tub that saved those drivers from serious injury.

Rolls-Royce builds ‘Peony’ Phantom limited edition

The ‘Peony’ flower design is an ancient oriental motif that represents royalty, wealth and distinction. The motif, in traditional blue and yellow, is used throughout the vehicle, featuring as an exterior logo along with interior wood trim inlay and oriental art door capping. Customised tread plates also include the logo emblazoned with the words “Peony motif, exclusive Bespoke Phantom”. Customers also receive a special perfume developed by Emirati perfume company HIND.

The Middle East has been a major driver of the ‘Rolls-Royce Bespoke Program’ and currently claims the highest volume of requests for the custom cars. The program is a special service that allows customers to change virtually every tactile facet of the car, whether it is a thicker steering wheel or a completely customized cabin.

Working in a closed off area of the Goodwood assembly line, the Bespoke team even go so far as to develop their own paints, materials and mechanical modifications. The mechanical package of the Peony, however, has been left untouched, meaning power comes from the familiar 6.75L V12 engine. Peak output stands at 453hp (338kW) and 530lb-ft (720Nm) of torque. Spy Photos Volkswagen GTI MKVI / MK6

VW's new global 2.0-liter turbocharged engine is expected to power the
new GTI, reportedly generating 211 hp thanks to the addition of a new
variable valve-lift system.

With the initial reveal of Volkswagen's Golf VI out of the way, VW
engineers have begun testing what appears to be the next-generation
GTI. The higher-performance touches are evident throughout.

Designers have done away with the horizontal slats on the standard
Golf's front fascia, in favor of a honeycomb mesh treatment similar to
current GTI. The front bumper's two outside air-ducts are straked for
dramatic effect, while ditching the fog lamps to feed more air to the
brakes. Speaking of the brakes, the calipers are painted red.

This Golf has a prominent dual exhaust system, something new to the
GTI lineup. The dual exhaust setup raised questions that this might
be a prototype for an R32 replacement, but the R32's dual pipes are
centrally mounted, and the grillework is more in keeping with prior
GTI cues. Add to this reports from industry sources claiming that the
V6-powered R32 won't be renewed in the sixth-generation Golf lineup,
and it's a certainty that we're looking at the GTI here.

Sources report that the GTI will make a veiled debut as a concept at
the Paris Motor Show this October.

Geneva Next Year 700bhp four-door Koenigsegg coming

The new car has been in development for the past two years. The firm currently has a clay model of the car, but needs outside investment to further the project on. It is looking to the Gulf for investment, where the firm has found many fans.
The Swedish supercar maker, Koenigsegg, is looking to launch a 700bhp V8-engined four-door saloon by 2011. A prototype version of the car is expected at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010.

The four-door saloon – set to go up against the forthcoming Aston Martin Rapide and Porsche Panamera – will be the firm’s first foray into mass production, especially in markets like the US where it will begin deliveries next year. The CCX will remain in production, but numbers will be limited to a maximum of 35 per year.

‘The four-door will be slightly cheaper than the CCX, and we hope to build 70-80 cars a year’, Petre said. The US is expected to account for 50 percent of sales, with Asia taking 30 percent, and the Middle East 20 percent.

Koenigsegg is expanding its dealer network in the region and currently has showrooms in Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. A Bahrain dealership is due to open within the next year. ‘We will be in every GCC country apart from Oman’, Petre added.

The engine will not be the same as found within the CCX, but will be a V8 with 700bhp. It will be built entirely out of carbonfibre – but is not based on the same architecture as the CCX, however there will be family resemblances between the two.

Andreas Petre, Koenigsegg’s Dubai manager, told CAR Middle East, that the new four-door ‘will weigh less than any other performance saloon on sale, and will have a top speed of 350kph.’

The next generation Toyota Prius spy Catch First Interior

The inside word from Japan is that the 2010 version of the landmark hybrid will deliver both better fuel economy and more power. The 1.5-liter engine will be replaced by a larger 100bhp 1.8-liter version which will improve high speed cruising of the vehicle. A new generation electric motor will boost the model's total power to 160bhp and there are rumours of an optional solar panel roof being fitted to the model as well. Improvements will certainly get the thumbs up from the politicians, fuel economy could go down to as low as 2.9 litres per 100 kilometres (80 mpg) whilst emissions may drop below the 100g/km mark.

The next generation Toyota Prius is entering its final stages of development and to entice those prospective consumers in we can bring the first shot of the redesigned interior.

It may not look it, but the body will be all-new, growing 2.5 centimetres wider, but getting some 3 centimetres shorter in overall length. The Prius' range may also grow from the current one body style, with a sedan variant expected to be launched as well and a little further down the line we should also see a plug-in version.
